Midwives care for women during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. Many women choose midwives because they desire natural childbirth and want a provider who will support options such as upright positions and alternative comfort measures in labor. Midwives view labor as normal and usually avoid intervention unless deemed necessary, consulting with obstetricians if complications arise. Midwives also provide well woman screening physical exams, address gynecologic concerns, and provide contraception.
