What is Midwifery?
Midwifery is a patient-centered approach to pregnancy and women’s health that focuses on supporting the natural processes of childbirth while ensuring the safety of both mother and baby. Certified nurse midwives (CNMs) are trained healthcare professionals who specialize in providing comprehensive care, including:
- Prenatal care and education
- Labor and birth support
- Postpartum care for mother and baby
- Breastfeeding guidance
- Reproductive health and family planning

Benefits of Choosing a Midwife
Midwifery care offers a holistic and highly individualized approach to pregnancy and birth. Some key benefits include:
- More time for personalized care – Midwives take the time to understand your birth preferences, answer your questions, and support your decisions.
- Lower rates of medical interventions – Research shows that midwifery care is associated with fewer C-sections, inductions, and epidurals.
- Continuous labor support – Your midwife is by your side throughout labor, offering comfort techniques and guidance.
- Comprehensive postpartum care – Midwives focus on whole-person wellness, including physical recovery, emotional well-being, and lactation support.
- Collaborative care – Midwives at Stellis Health work alongside physicians and specialists, ensuring a safe, team-based approach to your care.

Midwifery
The word “midwife” literally means “with woman.”
Certified Nurse Midwives are focused on wellness and spend much time educating patients about ways to stay healthy. Midwives are commonly thought of as providing pregnancy care (prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum), but they also provide wellness and preventative care. They have a solid nursing and medical foundation and care for women from pre-childbearing years to after menopause. Midwives provide wellness screenings, physical exams, address gynecological concerns, and provide contraception.
Many women choose midwives for pregnancy care because they are looking for a more natural childbirth experience and want a provider who will support options like upright positions and alternative comfort measures while in labor. Midwives view labor as a normal part of life and usually avoid intervention unless deemed necessary, always consulting with obstetricians if complications arise.
