Honoring Glen Deutsch, MD: 50 Years of Service to Buffalo

Celebrating five decades of care, compassion, and community leadership

This August, Stellis Health is honored to celebrate the remarkable career and retirement of Glen Deutsch, MD, who has faithfully served the Buffalo community for 50 years.

A Half-Century of Dedicated Care

Dr. Deutsch began his medical career in 1975 at what was then Buffalo Clinic, now known as Stellis Health. At the time, the hospital was located at the top of the hill, the clinic at the bottom, and his first home sat right in between. “Buffalo has always been home,” he says.

As an internal medicine physician, Dr. Deutsch was hired to carry forward the legacy of Dr. Catlin, and quickly became a cornerstone of the clinic—expanding services and establishing a coronary care unit. His deep commitment to the community and passion for providing high-quality, local care made him a steadfast advocate for patients throughout the region.

Witnessing—and Leading—Transformational Change

Over the past five decades, medicine has changed dramatically. Dr. Deutsch reflects that nearly every tool, treatment, and technology he once relied on has evolved. “There’s only one medication I still use from when I started—Furosemide,” he notes.

He’s practiced through the eradication of smallpox, the discovery of Lyme disease, and the invention of the CAT scan. In his early years, police would drive across counties in search of blood for patients in crisis. Today, AEDs are accessible in schools, parks, and community centers—and electronic medical records have replaced two-inch thick paper charts.

A Grateful Heart

Dr. Deutsch is quick to express gratitude—for his patients, for Buffalo, and especially for his family. “I’m most grateful for Florence and my family, my good health, and my job and career,” he shares.

With humility, he says he’s received more from the clinic and community than he’s given. “I retire with no regrets,” he says. “I’m very happy.”

He credits much of his journey to his wife, Florence, who held down the home front while he helped grow the clinic into what it is today. Together, they raised four children and are now proud grandparents of seven.

What’s Next? More Curiosity. More Joy.

“I love to do things. I love to learn things. To build things. To tinker,” he says. Whether a hobby lasts six months or six years, Dr. Deutsch has never been one to sit still for long.

He’s a strong believer in the power of gratitude—something he practices daily and shares often. As a supporter of the Bounce Back program, he believes happiness comes from gratitude, not the other way around.
